Wellbeing in the Workplace - Where Do I Start?

A client of mine working in the HR department of a large company told me that everybody seems to be talking about wellbeing at work. And only few have any idea what this means. Some think wellbeing means enjoying a massage in between meetings. Others think they must practise meditation techniques before a stressful conference call. Wellbeing at work is actually much more complex than that.

Firstly, let’s be clear that Wellness and Wellbeing are not the same.

Wellness is the absence of mental or physical disease, a balance of the mind, body and spirit that results in an overall feeling of wellbeing (Wikipedia). Wellbeing is sustained work-life balance which results in higher performance. To find wellbeing at work you need to pass through the gates of wellness.

Why should companies worry?

First off sick people aren’t productive or even happy to work. Wellbeing projects need happiness as a turnkey. An effective corporate strategy will ensure wellness solutions are being integrated to achieve wellbeing and sustainable health.

So how can we have a happy-tree in the middle of our company’s lobby?

We simply need to plant four seeds. These neurotransmitters are responsible for authentic happiness:

1. Dopamine

2. Oxytocin

3. Serotonin

4. Endorphins

Hack Your Brain at work to get a D-O-S-E of Happiness with some simple tricks:

Dopamine motivates us to take action with a surge of pleasure. Reward your brain, and break projects into little pieces with achievable goals so you feel good ticking off tasks.

Oxytocin builds trust and healthy relationships. Simply do something unexpectedly nice to someone in your company. Your brain will reward you!

Serotonin is produced in the brain when you relax. If you want a serotonin boost during a stressful day, take a 4-minute break. Recall a positive event. Expose yourself to the sun for just a few minutes or breathe mindfully for 45 seconds.

Endorphins are triggered if you eat a piece of dark chocolate. Use this trick if you need a boost, not a reward.

Integrating Wellbeing At the Workplace is a Change Management Process- But You Need to 1st apply Wellness to Yourself

Wellbeing at work first requires you to be leader of your own wellness. As suggested by Gandhi, be the change you want to see in your world.
